Francisca axe
West-European war axe used for either contact combat or non-contact combat, generally known as a throwing axe. The name "Francisca" was given by the Italians as for a weapong used by the Franks.*It is a characteristic national weapon of the Franks, used already at the time of the Merovingians (c.500-750). Later on, up to 9th century used not just by the Franks but also by the Germans, Burgundians, Lomberds and Goths.*The Franks used it as a missile, with an efficient throwing range of about 15m (50ft).* The weight of the blade is usually around 450 - 700g.*The Scandinavian battle-ax probably derived from this ancient weapon.
